Glossary
pH-Neutral Floor Cleaner
A cleaning product with a neutral pH (around 7) that cleans hardwood floors without breaking down the finish, unlike acidic or alkaline cleaners.
pH-neutral cleaners have a pH close to 7 (neutral on the 0–14 scale), meaning they are neither acidic nor alkaline. For hardwood floor finishes, this matters because the finish itself can be chemically degraded by cleaners that are too far from neutral.
Common household cleaning mistakes include using white vinegar (pH 2–3, highly acidic) or dish soap (alkaline) on hardwood floors. While they may appear to clean, acidic cleaners slowly break down polyurethane finish over months and years, causing premature dullness and brittleness. Alkaline cleaners can leave a dulling residue.
A genuine pH-neutral cleaner—such as Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner or a professional-grade equivalent—cleans effectively without any chemical attack on the finish. It lifts dirt, oils, and everyday grime without leaving residue or stripping protective layers.
For our professional cleaning service, we use pH-neutral, low-moisture solutions specifically formulated for finished hardwood. These products remove deep-seated grime from the seams of the floor that consumer products cannot reach, without any risk to the finish or wood beneath.
