Acrylic and Wax Buildup

Layers of wax or acrylic products that accumulate on hardwood floors over time, causing dullness, stickiness, and adhesion problems for new finish coats.

Acrylic and wax buildup occurs when floor polish, paste wax, or acrylic-based products are applied repeatedly over time without removal. Each layer traps dirt, dulls the floor's appearance, and creates a cloudy, sticky film that no amount of cleaning can remove.

The most common sources are consumer floor polish products (Murphy's Oil Soap, Mop & Glo, Bona Polish applied excessively), paste wax, and acrylic-based commercial floor coatings. Over years, these layers can build to significant thickness and become progressively harder to manage.

Wax and acrylic buildup creates a critical problem for floor restoration: polyurethane and other professional finish coatings cannot bond to wax. If a new coat is applied over an unwaxed surface, it will peel and fail within months. Before any recoating or refinishing can succeed, the wax must be stripped completely.

Professional wax and acrylic removal uses a low-odor chemical stripper to soften the buildup, which is then lifted with buffing pads and neutralized—all without sanding or damaging the wood beneath. The result is a clean, bare surface ready for a fresh professional finish.
